Frequently Asked Questions

  • In the Northwest Territories, the terms therapist, counsellor, and psychotherapist are often used interchangeably. Often all the titles will refer to themselves as counsellors. Psychotherapist, however, is a protected title and can only be used by people with a master’s degree and extensive training and supervision. Counsellor is not a protected title, and therefore can be used by anyone. Often, counsellors have the same training, but not always. At Bloom we are all Masters level Registered Psychotherapists who provide counselling and therapy.

  • Yes, confidentiality is a cornerstone of counselling. All information shared with your counsellor is kept private, except in cases where it is required by law or there is an imminent risk of serious harm to yourself or others.

  • If you need to cancel or reschedule your session, we kindly request that you provide your counsellor with at least 24 hours' notice. A cancellation with less than 24 hours’ notice will incur a charge of 50% of the session fee.

  • A virtual session at our practice offers the same professional support and confidentiality as an in-person session but is conducted remotely using secure, HIPPA-compliant video conferencing software.

  • Paying for your session is conveniently handled through our Jane booking software, which automatically bills a credit card on file. We also accept Electronic Money Transfers (E-Transfers). We do not accept cash or cheques.

  • Most extended health benefits packages offered by employers contain some provisions to cover fees incurred in treatment by a psychotherapist. If you do not have insurance through your employer, ask your counsellor about their sliding scale pricing.

  • Sliding-scale pricing refers to a flexible fee structure based on individual financial circumstances. At Bloom Wellness YK, we understand that access to affordable mental health care is important, and we offer sliding-scale pricing to accommodate varying financial situations.

  • We do not offer direct billing at this time, but your counsellor will provide invoices and receipts for prompt reimbursement from your insurance provider. Please refer to your insurance provider to discuss your eligibility and coverage to determine what services are covered by your plan.

  • Deciding how often to attend counselling sessions can vary depending on individual goals, needs, and circumstances. We typically suggest scheduling sessions every 1-3 weeks initially. This interval allows enough time between sessions to reflect on your progress and apply strategies discussed in sessions while also maintaining momentum in your therapeutic journey. At Bloom Wellness YK, we understand that adjusting to counselling can be a personal journey, and we encourage clients to find a frequency that feels right for them.
